Balloonflower is traditionally regarded as having expectorant properties in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) where It's used to relieve coughs that occur as a result of common colds.

Chinese licorice: traditional support for healthy lung function in TCM

In Chinese medicine, the lungs are understood to function at their best when they have enough moisture, and to be adversely affected by dryness.
