Krill oil is derived from Antarctic Krill (Euphausia Superba), which is a source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Krill are tiny, red marine creatures similar in appearance to prawns, but much smaller in size. Krill accumulate omega 3 by feeding on omega 3 rich microscopic algae. This algae also provides krill with a robust source of the antioxidant astaxanthin, which is responsible for its distinct red colour. Krill oil has a unique molecular structure as the omega-3 fatty acids are incorporated into phospholipids whereas in fish oil the omega-3 fatty acids are mostly present as triglycerides.
